<image:title>Media Articles - Everything you never thought you'd know about Hellebores</image:title>
<image:caption>The beautiful hellebore, so treasured for its sultry flowers that bloom during the bleak midwinter, is actually a native of Greece and Asia Minor, and is part of the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. The genus name Helleborus is directly translated as Food for Helle, helle referring to the Greek goddess Helle, goddess of the Hellespont, the body of water that bridges the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea and boros meaning food. A more sinister interpretation of the name Helleborus, derives from the Greek elein, to injure, and boros, meaning food, is indicative of the plant's toxic nature. Like all garden plants, hellebore has its fair share of common names. One such name is the Oracle Rose: In times past, they were used to predict the weather. Villagers would cut 12 stems each year on December 24th, one for each month of the year. The stems were then nominated a month and placed in vases. If the flower opened it was indicative of good weather, while a closed bloom meant poor conditions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Media Articles - Everything you never thought you'd know about Poppies</image:title>
<image:caption>Now that we're approaching November it'll be no surprise to you that I've chosen the poppy as this month's flower. The poppy is of course synonymous with death and remembrance, and before that, opium, but that's been done to death! (If you'll pardon the pun!) I'm going to delve into the ancient myths and medicinal uses that are perhaps not as well known or recognised as our beloved remembrance symbol. There's a lot more to the common poppy than meets the eye! There are about 50 other species of Poppy that are grown for their attractive flowers and interestingly cut foliage.. Poppy, or Papaver to give it its posh Latin name, is a species of flowering plant in the family Papaveraceae. Good to know! Like all other common flowers, poppy has its fair share of colloquial names, although not very imaginative, I have to say: Common Poppy, Corn Poppy, Field Poppy, Flanders Poppy, Red Poppy and, you guessed it, Shirley Poppy. Slightly more adventurous is Corn Rose, Red Weed and Coquelicot.</image:caption>

<image:title>Media Articles - Who knows what The Lily of the Valley has in common with Foxgloves?</image:title>
<image:caption>Lily of the valley, so quintessentially English, is a woodland flowering plant with sweetly scented, pendent, bell-shaped white flowers borne in sprays in spring. It is native throughout the cool temperate Northern Hemisphere in Asia and Europe. Convallaria majalis, to give it its botanical name, means 'that which belongs to May'. Also referred to as May Lily or May Bells, it typically blooms in May in the Northern Hemisphere, symbolising the onset of spring and the return of warmer weather. The beautiful fragrant bells of convallaria used to be quite common in the British Isles in shady woodlands. Apparently in the time of Nicholas Culpeper (who died in 1654), it was widespread on Hampstead Heath. Sadly, with the removal of tree cover the plant has disappeared from there.</image:caption>

<image:title>Media Articles - Everything you never thought you'd know about foxgloves</image:title>
<image:caption>Our native Foxglove, or to give it is proper name digitalis purpurea, is a biennial plant native to Europe, North Africa and Central Asia. In 1753, Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, who formalised binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming organisms, and known as the 'father of modern taxonomy', gave foxglove its Latin name simply because he thought the flowers looked like the fingertips of gloves. The name foxglove exists in a list of plants as far back as the 14th century. The prefix fox has most likely been derived from folks, who to our ancestors of that time were the fairies, but to speak of them explicitly was believed to get their attention & cause them to do mischief. Glove may have come from the Anglo-Saxon gliew, which was the name for a musical instrument consisting of many small bells, put the two together to make Fairy Bells. Some stories have told that the word foxglove is merely a misrepresentation of "folk's glove", gloves little people might wear. Others say fairies gave the flowers to the foxes to put on their paws to enable them to sneak silently into the hen house without being heard. This story is echoed in the belief that the mottled spots inside the flowers are actually fairy handprints.</image:caption>

<image:title>Media Articles - A New Favourite Garden.</image:title>
<image:caption>It's been a long winter, much of the time spent twiddling my thumbs, staring impatiently at the soil to see when, or even if, anything was going to grow this year. But here we are, in the midst of Spring, time racing past with indecent speed; it's time to get out there and enjoy the horticultural fest that is Garden Visiting Time! Over the years David & I have visited a lot of gardens in the UK, from Dunrobin Castle in North West Scotland to Trebar Gardens, towards the western tip of Cornwall. It occurs to me that, as I write this, these two gardens in particular are my all-time favourites. They have what is commonly referred to as the Wow Factor. After a two-hour drive from Invergarry's Glengarry Castle Hotel on the shores of Loch Ness, we drew up in front of this towering, imposing edifice that is Dunrobin Castle, family seat of the Earl of Sutherland and the Clan Sutherland. But it was when we ventured to the rear of the castle that my mouth formed a perfect O. A gasp of sheer delight at the drama of the terraced formal gardens, sloping towards a pair of magnificent iron gates. The whole garden was flanked by imposing brick walls which appeared to hold back the tempestuous North Sea.</image:caption>

<image:title>Media Articles - There's a Spring in my Step</image:title>
<image:caption>I've been thinking! I've always scoffed at gardeners who claim to enjoy plunging their hands into the soil, getting in touch with the earth, as being akin to tree huggers (what's wrong with tree huggers?). Until recently. There's never been a month when I haven't spent time in our garden. Until this winter. Heavy snow mid-December, followed by persistent rain, the festive season, a brief hiatus between Christmas and new year when I pruned the climbing roses, sharp prolonged frosts in January and then Covid, kept me off my borders for almost two months. By early February the garden was looking the worse for wear. Patios and paths green and slippery with lichen, overgrown clematis Montana spread across the pergola plunging the Catio into darkness. Fern fronds collapsed, perennial top growth desiccated, dried ornamental grasses strewn all over the show. Instead of relishing my return I felt quite overwhelmed; where to start?</image:caption>

<image:title>Media Articles - Frolics with the Felines of Church Lane</image:title>
<image:caption>My two great loves in life, after my dearly beloved husband David, are my garden and my cats. Not known for their compatibility, I try to get them to work in harmony but the results are often unintentionally entertaining. The first thing we did when we moved into our house in 1997 (Tony Blair came to power as PM and Things Could Only Get Better!) was build the Catio. David erected a pergola that spanned the back of the house, then encased the entire patio with enclosure mesh. This area was to be a secure outside space for our six cats, with containerised sub-tropical plant displays, allowing the birds safe haven in our garden beyond. Several shelves were erected as viewing platforms for the cats to eye the outside world, as well as indulge in a spot of sunbathing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Media Articles - Gardening is Not for Wimps</image:title>
<image:caption>Do you dread this time of year as much as I do? As the autumn gets into full swing, I feel the trepidation rising. No more casually stepping out into your garden in your t-shirt on a warm dry day to do some deadheading, a more determined approach is called for: I have to gird myself up to take that first step after a night of heavy rain; to don waterproof clothing in order to shake excess water off shrubs and tall perennials now bent double under its weight. It occurs to me, as I peel off my sodden attire, that gardening is not for wimps! Don't get me wrong, I'm a year-round gardener, and regularly prune my climbing roses on New Year's Day. No doubt, there's something very precious about the bright sunny days of autumn, when you can relish the fresh air and have a real go at clearing summer borders. But the blustery, grey winter days hang heavy. Ornamental grasses have collapsed, their strappy leaves flying around the garden like streamers. The ivy has climbed into the apple tree and worked its way under the decking of the roof terrace when you weren't looking. The pull of the garden is as strong as ever but finding the motivation to get going is a Herculean task!</image:caption>

<image:title>Media Articles - Drought Resistant Plants</image:title>
<image:caption>This summer's unprecedented heatwave has been a steep learning curve for me, as I'm sure it has been for all gardeners who thought they knew their onions. Over the years I have adhered to the Right Plant Right Place principle, selecting perennials that would thrive in both the dry shade under the apple tree, to the full uninterrupted sunny border, and part shade in between. Pulmonarias and brunneras thrived in the shade, providing lovely blue flowers in the spring and a tapestry of foliage well into autumn. Rudbeckias, phlox and crocosmias pumped out bold colours in late summer. I pride myself on my careful choices to promote the survival of the fittest, I mulch the beds every spring religiously. In addition to our irrigation system, I water either early morning or in the evening, aiming the flow at the roots so as not to waste water, I apply the appropriate fertiliser, I deadhead regularly. What more can a keen gardener do to nurture her plot?</image:caption>

<image:title>Media Articles - Myddelton House</image:title>
<image:caption>Myddelton House Gardens is the hidden gem in the crown of North London gardens. The life-long home of E A Bowles was a recipient of the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2011 and restored to tell the story of the famous botanist's life and gardening style. Many of the features that Bowles created remain, such as the rock garden and an Alpine meadow, inspired by Bowles' plant hunting holidays in the Pyrenees mountains. The intriguingly curved lawn which runs down the middle of the garden, bookended by two bridges over grass, neither of them leading anywhere useful, was a branch of the New River running through Myddelton House to fill up the pond. Another feature is his so-called "lunatic asylum" of horticultural oddities, including the corkscrew hazel (Corylus avellana 'Contorta'), an unusually warped pine tree, extra spiky 'hedgehog holly', and an upright ivy bush. Once word spread, other gardeners sent Bowles cuttings of their own 'demented' plants for his collection. The old Enfield market cross was salvaged to become the centrepiece of the rose garden. Parts of the medieval London Bridge have been in the gardens for some time. Around the garden are a number of round stone balls that are in fact medieval shots, used in catapult-style weapons. They were acquired by Bowles when they were discovered by a friend of his, after being uncovered by coastal erosion in Sandgate in Kent.</image:caption>
